Ok, so I'm a geek. I freely admit to it! Just remember, when you're website is going crazy or you need it to do something past static pages... who ya gonna call?
Life as an Adult Webmaster

If I were to try and characterize a "typical" adult webmaster, I'm 99% sure that I couldn't get it done. From the shows I've been to and talked with a variety of them and the boards I'm active on or have been active on, the only thing that is for sure is that the group known as "adult webmasters" is as diverse as any group on the planet.
I've met people who are retired, living out their "golden years", trying to make a little side money with an adult toy shop. I've met 20somethings that wouldn't know a roadblock if they hit it square in the face - because they always find a way around it and just make things work. Straight couples, gay couples, transgenders, people living "the life" and people just wanting to look like they are part of "the life".
One of those areas where it truly takes all kinds.
When you get down to it though, every one of them (well almost...) are human and have lives going on in the "real world". Most of us may never meet half the people we talk with daily on boards and call friends, no matter how much we may want to have a face to face conversation. There are others, who we know that the boards provide a safe insulator for us to go about our lives in that other world.
We are human though and many of us have families and kids and all the things that the rest of the world would never think could be since we work with "adult materials"... "porn"... We are concerned parents... concerned children who are taking care of our own parents... we are also some of the sharpest business people around, as well as some of the most politically aware people around... Yes, we live in the real world, more than may people do.
This past week+, reality has hit me square in the face. It started last week with the suicide of a young man. The son of one of the teachers where my kids go to school. Small school... hit everybody pretty hard... I didn't attend the funeral, but there were upwards of 700 people who did attend.
Tonight, a young man that played baseball with my son a few years ago and is still one of his buddies in school, was killed in a gang related drive by shooting. He was a known gang member, nobody can deny that.
Both of these young men made some bad choices, in very different ways. Maybe somebody could have seen these things coming, maybe they couldn't have been seen. Who knows.
What I do know, is that I've spent the past week taking every opportunity to talk with my kids to see how they are doing with all of this hitting so close to home.
I'm sure that every generation of parents has had various things to deal with... areas to worry about their kids getting into... I don't know if it's really any more difficult now than it ever was to be a parent, but it's difficult, no doubt. To sit down and have an honest conversation with your kid about how he is doing, knowing a friend was violently killed... and at the same time, doing your best to be sure that he's not making any of those same choices that could lead to the same early end...
No matter how the rest of the world may want to view "adult webmasters", it doesn't really matter. Adult webmasters are just people, dealing with all the same things as people in other industries and at times, taking life as it comes.
What I can say about the vast majority of Adult Webmasters that I know, is that as a group, they are more open about what happens in the world, have fewer hangups than almost any other group of people and generally don't try to impose their views on others. They are also some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and I consider it one of the happiest accidents around, that I've ended up where I am.
